Therapy for Teens

Is your teen feeling overwhelmed or not as joyful as they used to be? Are they struggling with an eating disorder, or do you have concerns about possible substance use?

The teenage years can be a mix of exciting new experiences and significant stress. With changing hormones, academic pressures, and the desire to fit in socially, it's easy to feel out of control. This stress can affect a teen's mental health and well-being.

Common Challenges Teens Face

Teens often encounter serious challenges that impact their mental and emotional health:

  • Loss: This might involve the death of a loved one or pet, parental separation or divorce, or moving to a new place and school.
  • Stress: While some stress can motivate, too much can lead to burnout. Teens often feel pressure to excel in school, work part-time jobs, and gain peer acceptance.
  • Violence: Experiences of bullying at school or home can lead to feelings of isolation and may result in symptoms of PTSD if not addressed.

This list is not exhaustive, and there are many reasons a teen might benefit from speaking with a therapist. If you believe therapy could support your teen, please contact us.

Types of Therapy for Teens

Here are some of the primary types of therapy used to support teens with mental health issues:

  • Individual Therapy: In one-on-one sessions, therapists often use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help teens understand the link between their thoughts, feelings, and actions.
  • Group Therapy: Although we do not currently offer group therapy, we recognize its value. In group settings, teens can learn from peers facing similar challenges, guided by a professional facilitator.
  • Family Therapy: This approach involves the teen and their family members, fostering effective and respectful communication within the family.

The best therapy approach for a teen is determined by a trained therapist, who may use a combination of these methods to provide comprehensive support.
